On a chilly 2019 President’s Day, the TARS weathered a push by Esperanza in the third inning where the TARS coughed up three runs, but got the final run and won 4-3 on Monday. Esperanza big bats were led by Dylan Kanell and C.J. Larsen, all knocking in runs in the inning.
The TARS got things started in the second inning when an error scored one run.
After Esperanza 3-run inning Newport pulled away for good when shortstop Olmstead, JohnJohnny Olmstead blasted a solo home run. That put the TARS back up 4-3 and the rest was handled by senior Austin, KellyKelly Austin on the mound.
Austin was the winning pitcher for the TARS. He surrendered three runs on two hits over seven innings, striking out ten and walking one.
Cole Hoffman was on the mound for Esperanza. He surrendered four runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three. Larsen threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen.
